Basement Renovation Ideas...

So, Robb is at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on a field trip, learning about the electrical systems to maintain the climates and individual animal environments at the Rainforest. I'm at home watching the Cavs game and "supposed" to be browsing around for decorating/renovating ideas for our basement project. I got like 50 magazines and some books from the library. I just happened to be browsing online and stumbled onto this cutest project I thought would be perfect for Valentine's Day! I've never made these before, but how hard can they be! So I did my due diligence, copying and pasting this project into our blog. I don't have a clue what Scandinavian baskets are, nor do I think I care, but these little heart treat pouches are pretty clever! Let me know if you make one!!

DIY Woven Paper Hearts

The lovely ladies behind Bird and Banner were kind enough to send over an adorable DIY for me to share with you this morning on Once Wed. Erin and Nicole are brilliant when it comes to anything paper, so I hope you enjoy this little project as much as I did…

I’ve always loved these little Scandinavian heart baskets that my friend taught me to make years ago. They are traditionally made and used at Christmas time in Denmark. I made a woven heart out of my wedding invitations as a gift to my husband on our first anniversary. We wanted to follow the tradition of giving paper, plus we had a bunch of leftover invites! You can make these out of any paper ephemera from the wedding, it just need to be large enough to fold over and fit the template. Heavy card stock can be difficult, but you could make a color copy on to nice paper if your invitations are too thick. These little hearts have so many uses. They could be incorporated them into your wedding favors, table decor, or escort cards. They also make beautiful holders for small gifts.

Supplies: Invitations, Bone Folder, Ruler, Pencil, Scissors and Double Stick Tape. You will also need some cardstock for the template.

1. Estimate the size of the heart you will make by folding your papers in half.
2. Create a template for your heart by drawing a square and adding an oval arch at the top. This is one half of the heart. Make sure it fits your paper.

3. Trace the template onto each of two papers with the flat end along on the fold and cut out. Mark one side A and the other B lightly in pencil (you’ll want to erase them later).
4. Put the two shapes together to form a heart and note where they overlap. Then cut two evenly spaced slits into each shape just past the mark (it makes the weaving a little bit easier to cut past the mark).

5. Now you are ready to weave the shapes together to form the heart.
Start with the two halves still folded with the point of the heart towards you.
• Thread the first strip of A through the inside first strip of B
• Thread the second strip of B through the first strip of A.
• Thread the first strip of A through the third strip of B

Alternate this process for the other strips to complete the weaving. It’s helpful to “pop” open the strips in order to thread through. Your heart should open and form a little basket. If it doesn’t try again. It can be tricky but once you get it you won’t forget.

6. All that is left is to cut a handle. Folded and tape into place. Time: 20-30 minutes
cost: Free!

Where a kid can be a kid!!

The last two weeks of December I was on vacation from work. I had vacation time left and needed to use it by the end of the year or it would be gone forever! My time flew by with all the Christmas activities, but I got a few hours of treasured time with Jill and Braden and Stacy and Aidan, and also had lunch with my long lost friend Janet.

Jill, Braden, and I spent a morning playing at a toy store in Solon, and then had lunch at Panera. After dropping off Braden back at the grandparents for his nap, Jill and I went back out and shopped at Old Navy for a little. The day went way too fast for me, we NEVER have enough time. I didn't even take any pictures, but completely enjoyed my time with the both of them.

A few days later, I was invited to go up to Chuck-E-Cheese with Stacy, Aidan, Ryan, her sister Jonell, and niece Maddy. I was so excited to hang out with them, and go to Chuck-E-Cheese! I used to love going there when I was a kid, playing ski ball, jumping in the ball pit, watching all those big stuffed animal creatures sing and dance, mixing all the pops together so it tasted like bubble gum, and playing whack-a-mole. Stacy warned me that it had been re-done, and I might be disappointed. Nonetheless, it was a little different inside, but I still got my fill of ski ball, whack-a-mole, and playing with my little "nephew" Aidan. I didn't take too many pictures of the day, but captured a few of the cuties! Aidan LOVES to drive cars! Here's him driving away with Maddy smiling for the photo.Aidan took his eyes off the road for just a second to look at me and smile! Here he is again on this swing thing that went around in a circle like the arm of a clock.Oh, and Aunt Carisa gave Aidan his first tatoo! It's a magical Mickey Mouse!

Christmas Tree Coffee Cake

So you may have noticed that over Christmas, I made 3 Christmas Tree Coffee Cakes. My sister and dad used to make this, and I love the recipe because it has no raisins! Yucky!! This has quickly become a favorite treat to bring with us to the parties we go to. It's just perfect straight out of the oven, nice and gooey! Here's our first, Christmas morning tree, that we caught on camera!

The Last Tree!

On our 5th and final day of Christmas, we went to Robb's dad's new apartment. It's funny because it's not far at all from our house~ literally he can see our garage from his balcony! We always joke, "ok, we're leaving", and then, "ok, we're here!" The hallway smelled so garlicky and yummy when we got off the elevator, and Robb and I were really hoping that smell was coming from his dad's place. We had a fabulous dinner of beef tenderloin, green bean casserole, and garlic mashed potatoes. For dessert we indulged in a Dairy Queen Snickers Blizzard cake and Christmas Tree Coffee Cake #3! Yum. I didn't really get any good photos of his Christmas Tree by itself, but it's in the background of some pictures that we took while opening presents. See the Christmas Tree on the left?Robb's brother Garrick opening his gift and me sipping some coffee.Kelsey looking surprised and happy with her present! We got a new pizza stone for pizza Fridays!
